Weekly News .... August 23-27, 2010

What's Happening in 3B This Week?

Language Arts

  • In reading we will read "Butterflies in My Stomach" and "Babushka's Doll". We will use these stories to focus on using figurative language and how to write with good ideas.
  • In grammar we will continue reviewing the four types of sentences (statement, question, command, and exclamation).
  • Our main focus in writing this week is learning how to write with good ideas.
  • In penmanship we will continue with cursive writing.
  • World Wall Words for this week are said, because, friend, very,and again.

Math

In math we will continue with multiplication. We will explore equal groups and write multiplication sentences. Students will have their first timed test this Friday.

Science

We will continue with the Plant Needs experiment and learn about the job of the seed, roots, and stem.

Thursday

Quiz on exploring equal groups and writing multiplication sentences pgs. 204-207.

Friday

  1. Timed test 2 as a factor (they need to answer 36 problems in 3 minutes and 1/2).
  2. Word wall test (don't forget to review last week's words.)

Weekly News ... August 16-20, 2010

What's Happening in 3B This Week?
Language Arts
  • In reading we will read the books "I Wanna Iguana", "Three Stories You can Read to Your Cat", and "Three Stories You Can Read to Your Dog". We will focus on what good reader's do when they read, and how to choose the right book to read (not too easy, not too hard, just right).
  • In grammar students will learn about four types of sentences (statement, question, command, and exclamation). As a reference you can use the Language Arts book Pgs. 2-9.
  • In writing students will be very busy learning how to write a friendly letter (including the 5 parts of a letter), how to write different types of sentences, and how to write with great ideas.
  • World Wall Information - Every week students will have a word wall test. The test will include the new words of the week, and the previous words learned in class. Also, I will assess the grammar skills learned in class. In your child's homework folder you will find a portable word wall with all the words the students have studied. They should know how to spell them. Every week, your child will add the new words to their portable word wall, so please don't remove it from the homework folder. The first word wall words are: I, you, about, me, and the.
  • In Penmanship we will practice writing cursive capital and lower case letters Aa - Jj.

Math

In Math this week we will learn and practice how to use the grid paper notebook (one digit or letter per box), and also I will introduce the concept of multiplication.

Science

In Science students will learn what botany is and what botanist do. We will identify the parts of a plant and list what they give us. Also, we will use the scientific method to find out what plants need to grow healthy.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • This week students will start working on homework assignments from Monday-Thursday. Every night students must read for at least 15 minutes and record in the reading log notebook. This will be part of the daily homework.
  • Students will write the homework, tests and quizzes in the assignment book. Please check that the homework is completed and sign the assignment book every day. It is school policy this school year that a missing signature in the assignment book will be considered missed homework.

REMINDERS

  1. Open House this Thursday August 19 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. I am looking forward to meet you all.
  2. Make sure your child wears the proper uniform every day.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

· The Open House will be Thursday, August 19th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. It will be a great opportunity to meet and to give you all the information you need to help your child have a great year in third grade. We look forward to seeing you there!

· You will find the 2 special classes rotating schedules in the American School website for you to print and keep at home. Please note when your child needs to come with the P.E. uniform. It’s important you put the schedules in a safe and accessible place.

· You will also get the Student Handbook sign-up sheet. Since there will be no homework this first week, we ask you and your child to take time to go over the school’s rules in the handbook carefully and sign and return the page to school by Friday, August 13th. You can find this handbook in the American School website www.amschool.org.

· Students will also be taking a few textbooks home to cover. Please use non-sticky covers (clear plastic works best). All books need to be covered by Friday, August 20th.

· Fill out the personal information sheet and card and return them by Friday, August13th.

· Please keep at home the D’Nealian letters and number sheet. This school year we will do a lot of cursive. This might help your child when doing homework.

· Students can buy lunch in the cafeteria or they can bring their lunch from home. Plan accordingly so that he/she will enjoy it. Students are encouraged to keep a water bottle in the classroom every day for them to drink as they need to.

· An assignment book and homework folder will be sent home daily. It will include important information and homework assignments. Please check it every day and initial after you check that your child has completed his/her homework. It’s the best time to encourage homework responsibility and good study habits.

· Checking the classroom blog on a weekly basis is very important. Every week new information will be posted.
